# What Perplexity Computer really is — and the open source alternative

Perplexity Computer is a managed, multi-model cloud agent that operates a real computer, and it is closed, cloud-only and $200/month. ## The architecture, plainly

- A cloud agent, not an app. It runs in an isolated Linux sandbox (reported around 2 vCPU / 8GB) with a real browser, filesystem and terminal, plus Python, Node.js and common Unix tools pre-installed.
