What Perplexity Computer Costs, and the Open Source Alternative

Perplexity Computer costs $200 a month on Perplexity Max, with credits billed on top of every task and no self-hosted version. Kortix is the open-source AI Operating System that costs nothing to self-host, so you pay only your own compute and model bills.

Perplexity Max at $200 per month plus per-task credits, checked October 2026 at the source named in the column. Hardware and Portable Computer details from the Vellum breakdown.

What Perplexity Computer costs

Perplexity Computer is Perplexity's cloud agent, and it ships only inside a paid Perplexity plan. In the Builder.io review, the author ran it on Perplexity Max at $200 a month (checked October 2026), with credits consumed per task on top of the subscription, and Perplexity does not sell Computer as a standalone product. One seat therefore starts at $200 a month before a single task runs, and the credit meter sits on top of that floor.

Perplexity also offers a local variant, Portable Computer, launched August 25, 2026 with NVIDIA. As the Vellum breakdown records, it requires a Perplexity Pro or Max subscription plus hardware: an NVIDIA DGX Spark at about $4,679, or a Linux machine with an RTX GPU carrying at least 24 GB of VRAM, with no Mac support at launch. Local steps carry no token cost, and the runtime stays closed, so running it on your own desk means running a package you cannot read or change.

How credits turn into a surprising bill

The Perplexity subscription is the floor, and the credits are where the bill grows. In the same Builder.io test, a two-day website build hit a silent npm install failure inside the sandbox. The agent did not report the broken dependency and kept pushing failed builds to Vercel, spending 10,000 credits and about $200 in compute on top of the subscription before a person found the problem.

The reviewer's conclusion is the part to carry: a developer could read the logs and fix the dependency, and a non-developer would have had no signal that anything was broken. A meter that keeps running while an agent repeats failing work is expensive, and the failure stays quiet.

What self-hosting Kortix costs

Kortix is the open-source AI Operating System, and its software costs $0 to self-host. Agents, skills, company memory and connectors live in one git repo you own, and each session runs on its own cloud computer. You choose the machine (a laptop, a VPS, your VPC or on-prem) and the model (any provider with your own keys), then pay those bills directly. The self-hosting guide on this site walks through the setup.

Kortix also runs as a managed cloud for teams that prefer not to operate it. Free is $0 with 200 credits per month and 1 project. The team plan is $40 per seat per month with 2,500 credits per month per seat, pooled, and usage beyond the pooled balance is extra. The Kortix pricing page carries the current numbers.

Neither bill is zero

Both paths still pay for compute and models, so the comparison is about software floors and meters rather than the total. One seat on Perplexity Max costs $2,400 over a year before a single credit is spent. A self-hosted Kortix seat costs nothing in software and grows only with the work you actually run. The comparison table on this page sets the two side by side, and Kortix and Perplexity Computer compared goes through the rest of the differences. The alternatives guide covers how other agent platforms price and host, and the Kortix blog has the longer write-up.

06FAQ

Frequently asked questions

  1. N01

Is Perplexity Computer free, or can I self-host it?

It ships only inside paid Perplexity plans, and reviewers priced it on Perplexity Max at $200 a month with credits per task on top. There is no free tier and no self-hosted build of the cloud agent. The local Portable Computer still needs the subscription plus its own hardware.

  2. N02

Why did one website build burn 10,000 credits?

In the Builder.io test, an npm install failed silently in the sandbox. The agent did not report the broken dependency and kept pushing failed builds to Vercel, spending 10,000 credits and about $200 on top of the subscription before a person found the problem.

  3. N03

    What does self-hosting Kortix cost?

The software is $0 to self-host. You pay your own compute and model provider bills, with no per-seat subscription and no credit meter between you and your usage. Installation is one command on your own infrastructure.

  4. N04

    Does Kortix charge per seat?

The managed cloud has a team plan at $40 per seat per month with 2,500 credits per month per seat, pooled. Free is $0 with 200 credits per month and 1 project. Self-hosting the software costs nothing.

  5. N05

Does Portable Computer remove the Perplexity subscription?

No. It requires a Perplexity Pro or Max subscription plus hardware: an NVIDIA DGX Spark at about $4,679, or a Linux machine with an RTX GPU carrying at least 24 GB of VRAM. Local steps carry no token cost.
