What is a Perplexity Computer? Meet Kortix, the open-source alternative
A Perplexity Computer is not a device you buy. It is a hosted, closed AI agent that Perplexity runs in its cloud, plus a local variant that needs NVIDIA hardware. Kortix is the open-source AI Operating System: the same class of agent work, in a git repo you own.
How a Kortix session works
A project is a git repo with kortix.yaml at its root.A session runs one agent in its own sandbox. The sandbox clones the repo and works on a new branch. The agent commits, pushes the session branch, and opens a change request.A person reviews the change request and merges it.What a Perplexity Computer actually is
A Perplexity Computer is a hosted AI agent, not a piece of hardware. Perplexity describes it as a cloud-based agent that orchestrates 19 models at once, routing each subtask to whichever model handles it. It runs in a managed Linux sandbox with Python, Node.js, ffmpeg, and standard Unix tools already installed, and it comes with 400-plus managed connectors for apps such as Slack, Gmail, GitHub, and Notion (builder.io, checked October 2026). It launched on February 25, 2026, on the Perplexity Max plan at $200 per month, with credits consumed per task. You rent the agent and its sandbox from Perplexity.
The local variant runs the same closed runtime
On August 25, 2026, Perplexity added Portable Computer with NVIDIA, which runs the full agent runtime on hardware you own. The recommended machine is an NVIDIA DGX Spark, a desk-sized AI computer that Perplexity prices at around $4,679, or a Linux machine with an NVIDIA RTX GPU and at least 24 GB of VRAM. It still needs a Perplexity Pro or Max subscription, and it runs on Linux only at launch, with no Apple silicon (Vellum, checked October 2026). The privacy case is local work with zero token cost. The ownership does not change. Perplexity's own write-up says the system is proprietary and closed, and that you cannot audit the code.
Versus the computer on your desk
The computer on your desk is a general-purpose machine. You install programs on it, and they run there. "Perplexity Computer" is a product name for a hosted agent service, and the local variant is that same service on a machine you buy for it. The name borrows the word without being the thing.
Kortix is the open-source AI Operating System, and it puts the pieces in your hands. A project is a git repo you own. A session is one agent run, in its own isolated sandbox, on its own branch. The agent commits, pushes the branch, and opens a change request. A person merges it (Kortix docs).
What an open-source AI Operating System is
An AI Operating System is the layer your agents run on: the agents, their skills, company memory, connectors, triggers, and the machines each session boots. Kortix is that layer, and it is open source. Your agents, their skills, your company memory, and every connector in one git repo you own, with the agents working on real cloud computers (Kortix).
For a team, that changes four things. You can read, fork, and audit the code that runs your company, at Kortix on GitHub. You can self-host for free on your own infrastructure. You can run any model provider with your own keys. And your setup stays as files in a repo you own, instead of settings inside a vendor's product.
Owning the layer matters when the work is the company's. The head-to-head sits in the Kortix vs Perplexity Computer breakdown, and the alternatives page compares the wider open-source field. The self-hosting guide shows how to run Kortix on your own box.
What a Perplexity Computer is next to Kortix
Two agent products, one you rent and one you own.
| Criteria | Kortix | Perplexity Computer |
|---|---|---|
| 01What it is | The open-source AI Operating System | A hosted, closed AI agent product |
| 02Open source | Open source. Read it, fork it, audit it. | Closed. You cannot read or audit the code. |
| 03Where it runs | Kortix Cloud, your VPC, or your own on-prem network. | Perplexity's cloud, or your NVIDIA hardware on the same runtime. |
| 04Is it a device | No. Kortix runs on infrastructure you choose. | No, but Portable Computer needs NVIDIA hardware. |
| 05What you own | Your agents, skills, memory, and connectors in one git repo. | A Perplexity subscription; the product stays theirs. |
| 06Models | Any model provider with your own keys. | About 19 models Perplexity routes for you. |
Questions people ask about Perplexity Computer
- N01
Do I need special hardware to run Kortix?
No. Run it on Kortix Cloud, in your VPC, or on your own on-prem network. Self-host is free, and the self-hosting guide starts the stack on your own infrastructure.
- N02
Is Perplexity Computer a physical device?
No. It is a hosted agent that runs in Perplexity's cloud. The Portable Computer is a local variant that runs on NVIDIA hardware you buy, and it still needs a Perplexity subscription.
- N03
Is a Perplexity Computer the same as the laptop on my desk?
No. The computer on your desk runs programs you install. Perplexity Computer is a product name for a hosted agent service.
- N04
Can I pick the models?
With Kortix, yes: any model provider with your own keys. Perplexity Computer routes its own managed lineup for you, and its local variant ships with local models.
Run the agent layer on infrastructure you own.
